Visit to Tower Bridge

  • Thu, July 12, 2018
  • 11:00 AM
  • Tower Bridge Road, London SE1 2UP

This iconic London landmark has been opening and closing its famous ‘bascules’ (derived from the French word for see-saws) for over 125 years.   Most of us will, at some point, have stared up at it from the ground, but now there’s an opportunity to take in the view the other way round - from the top.

On our personal guided tour we will visit the Bridge’s Towers, the high-level Walkway, with a new glass floor, and go down to the Engine Rooms in which the original Victorian machinery is on display.   We will also learn a bit about the Bridge’s history:  it took a full 8 years just to decide on the design then a further 8 years to build.    Climbing the stairs is not a problem as there are lifts – and plenty of benches to sit down.   We have timed our visit to coincide with the opening of the Bridge at 11.45 although, understandably, the organisers point out they cannot absolutely guarantee this as there are sometimes last minute cancellations and space is also limited.

Included in the admission price is entry to the current exhibition “The Historic Bridge House Estates” - a fascinating organisation (granted a Royal Charter back in 1282) with overall responsibility for maintaining and repairing London’s five vital river crossings. For further information about Tower Bridge go to www.towerbridge.org.uk
NB: although there are lifts in the Bridge please be advised that visitors must be sufficiently fit to negotiate stairs in the unlikely event of an emergency evacuation.

The cost is £12.50 / £10.50 concessions, to be paid in cash on the day . To book your place, please contact Rosemary Forgan, email rosemary.forgan@marylebone.org, or Tel 020 7916 9353.
